What You Should Feed Your Dog *Pug*

Pugs originated in China and in the lower parts of Tibet. They were bred for the purpose to sit on the laps of the Chinese sovereigns during the Shang dynasty in 400 BC. However, there are documents of Pug like dogs seen in 551 BC by Confucius. They are thought to be responsible for the the modern Pekingese and King Charles spaniel breeds. Because they originated in the high altitude, it is assumed this is why they lack long noses.

When you feed your pug you need to remember that they need food high in animal fats. Their native foods would of included rodent, goat, deer, boar, horse or yak. Their grains included barley, rye, and mountain corn. For your everyday Pug we suggest horse and beef meat. Then for their grains give them barley, wheat and rice.

We would suggest you avoid any foods containing lamb, poultry, ocean fish, avocado, or yellow corn.

I recently adopted a pug mix from the shelter. He is estimated to be about 8 years old and has been passed from one shelter to another for over a year. He has been diagnosed as being obese. I know that he was not being overfed in the shelter. I think he must have a thyroid condition perhaps and he acts like he may be hypoglycemic. I have tried to help him lose some weight, but the weight doesn’t budge. It seems like pugs naturally have a round, somewhat heavy body type for their size. When my dog gets hungry, he starts to tremble all over and will go out and eat grass, sticks, or anything he can sink his teeth into. Then he chokes on whatever he ate because it irritates his throat. I try to keep his blood sugar balanced throughout the day. I was reading in my book, “Four Paws, Five Directions”, that if an animal has a weight problem, they should be fed a fish diet. I have been giving him a very little bit of organic oatmeal, mixed with a very small amount of “Taste of the Wild” dry food formulated with fish, and a small amount of boiled chicken. His treats are low calorie, made of salmon & sweet potato. From reading your suggestions on How to Feed a Pug, everything I am giving him is not suitable for him. I would be very hesitant to feed him a high fat diet as suggested. I was wondering what your thoughts are about this. Thank you for your time! Sharon Jogerst
